Dear Ocean County Constituent:

On behalf of the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders, I would like to make you aware of an important transportation meeting. NJ Transit will hold a series of three public scoping meetings on the Monmouth-Ocean-Middlesex (MOM) Rail Project in our region. One meeting will be held in each of the three participating counties. Passenger rail is critically needed in the Ocean-Monmouth region, one of the fastest growing regions of the State to provide a convenient, reliable travel choice for commuters, visitors and transit dependent residents.

Wednesday, December 4, 2002 - 1:30 PM to 9:30 PM
Ramada Inn of Toms River
2373 Route 9
Toms River, NJ

Since the MOM rail project will likely require federal funding for construction, it must compete with more than a dozen other transit projects, most of which are situated in northern New Jersey. While the Freeholder Boards of Ocean and Monmouth Counties strongly support the Lakehurst to Monmouth Junction alternative, Middlesex County does not. Your personal involvement and participation in this scoping process is crucial in demonstrating Ocean County's strong level of support for the MOM project. The brochure, "Say Yes to Mom", provides additional background information on the project. It is available at the County Connection in the Ocean County Mall, at the County Planning Office, at the County Transportation Department at 1959 Rt. 9, or at your local Chamber of Commerce.

Currently, commuters, visitors and residents have limited transportation choices to access northern New Jersey, Newark Airport and the New York City metropolitan area. Most residents still choose to drive the highway system which continues to experience traffic congestion and delays while some residents choose to take the bus to get to their destinations. The availability of rail service to central Ocean County, specifically to Lakewood and Lakehurst would offer a convenient alternative to the daily commute.

Again, on behalf of the Board of Chosen Freeholders, I encourage you to participate and express your views on the need for the MOM rail project at the December meeting. Together, we can bring new and expanded transportation choices to Ocean County residents. In the event, you are personally unable to attend this critical meeting, please express your support for this project through e-mail to:
