At a press conference in Lakewood Township on September 28, 2004, the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders again renewed its call for rail line service in Ocean County.

"This is not something we can just assume will happen," said Freeholder Director James F. Lacey. "We have to be vigilant and we have to push to make this happen."

In a resolution to NJ Transit and a host of federal and state elected officials, the Board is calling on the transportation agency to complete its draft environmental impact study with a recommendation for a locally preferred alignment, specifically the Monmouth Junction alignment.

"The absence of such a conclusion would disqualify the MOM rail line for future federal funding and thereby block advancement of a major, transportation improvement for Ocean and Monmouth counties," Lacey said.

On Tuesday, Lacey joined with his colleagues, Freeholders Joseph H. Vicari and Gerry P. Little and Monmouth County Freeholder Theodore Narozanick in a show of support for the Monmouth-Ocean-Middlesex rail line project.

The County officials also joined with a host of environmental, labor, community, commuter, and business organizations earlier this week to call on NJ Transit to reach a favorable decision when it concludes the $4.5 million study.

NJ Transit is nearing completion of a draft environmental impact study, which, in order for MOM to qualify for federal funding requires the selection of a clear and decisive rail alignment.

The MOM rail line is a smart growth, pro-environment and business friendly project that will improve the quality of life of residents throughout the project area for years to come. Millions of dollars of taxpayer funds, both State and Federal, have been spent studying this project. The time for action is now. The NJ Transit DEIS must conclude with a preferred alternative.
